What is Sports Rehabilitation?

Injuries in sports and often in everyday life are common. Many individuals may prefer to turn a blind eye to recurrent pain or long-standing problems, hoping that the pain may go away, or continue medication, which may not always be the best alternative or offer long-term improvement. Injury and pain may be caused either extrinsically by direct contact from another player or object or intrinsically by a weakness or dysfunction in the body's ability to deal with the forces placed upon it by an activity. Both may result in trauma to the soft tissue of the body, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.

Sports Rehabilitation not only treats the injury or complaint presented but investigates the underlying cause of pain. Many injuries such as torn hamstrings or shoulder pain may be the result of the body's inability to function optimally within its normal range of movement i.e. a golfer's failure to rotate their lower back during their swing may predispose them to pain in the upper spine, shoulder or elbow. With an understanding of biomechanics, motor control, neurology and tissue dynamics, Sports Rehabilitation offers a combination of manual therapy, massage, progressive functional rehabilitation and strength & conditioning training to recognize, treat and prevent further injury.

A Graduate Sport Rehabilitator (GSR) or Sports Rehabilitation Practitioner is a graduate level autonomous healthcare practitioner specialising in musculoskeletal management, exercise based rehabilitation and fitness.

Sport Rehabilitators have graduated with a degree in Sport Rehabilitation, a course of study suitable for them to be recognised as a graduate member of the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT), the United Kingdom professional body for Graduate Sports Rehabilitators. The Sport Rehabilitator offers the individual unique skills to allow continued optimal participation in their chosen activity.
